BIOSTEEL PROVIDES NATURAL AND SAFE ALTERNATIVE TO CONVENTIONAL SPORTS AND ENERGY DRINKS

CANADIAN PAEDIATRIC SOCIETY WARNS THAT CAFFEINE AND SUGAR-FILLED SPORTS AND ENERGY DRINKS MAY POSE POTENTIAL HEALTH RISKS TO CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

Toronto, September 28, 2017 — The Canadian Paediatric Society announced this week in a statement that “both sports drinks and CEDs (caffeinated energy drinks) pose potential risks for the health of children and adolescents and may contribute to obesity.” They identified sugar and caffeine, two of the leading ingredients in most sports drinks and CEDs, as the main culprits.

Canadian company BioSteel continues to set itself apart from conventional sports drinks by offering a completely natural product without the use of sugar or caffeine. Their flagship sports drink contains a blend of amino acids, minerals and vitamins, and is sweetened naturally with stevia (leaf) extract and red beet powder, which gives the product its signature pink colour. Additionally, BioSteel is committed to providing an evidence-based, nutrition-focused product that does not contain preservatives, additives or unnatural colouring. With premium ingredients and complete product transparency, BioSteel offers a safe and effective sports drink for not only athletes, but for anyone looking for premium hydration.

“Since day one, we have set ourselves apart in the sports drink market by offering a drink that is free of fillers, artificial sweeteners and flavours, and of course stimulants like sugar and caffeine,” said John Celenza, Co-Founder & CEO, BioSteel. “First and foremost our focus is on sports nutrition, and as such, we are proud to continue to offer a product with safe, premium and well-researched ingredients. We are incredibly supportive of reports like this one from the Canadian Paediatric Association. We believe consumers have a right to be educated about the potential health risks associated with the products they’re consuming, and should feel empowered to make informed choices.”

Sports drinks are commonly used to replace fluids and electrolytes lost during physical activity by rapidly delivering carbohydrates and fluid to the body. The problem is, the source of these carbohydrates is typically sugar, such as glucose-fructose (high fructose corn syrup), sucrose and maltodextrin, which in children may contribute to blood-sugar imbalances, obesity and dental cavities. Caffeine is often included in these drinks for its ability to increase aerobic endurance and delay time to exhaustion, but with possible side effects like increased heart rate, blood pressure and anxiety in susceptible individuals, along with the fact that studies have suggested that children are more likely than adults to develop caffeine dependence, it’s evident why such ingredients are deemed potentially harmful to children and adolescents.
